Why 10 sorts before 9
Sorting text is a character-by-character comparison, so “10” comes before “9” because the character 1 precedes 9. The numeric mode reads the leading number from each line and compares the values instead, which is what you want for a list of step numbers, prices or counts. Lines with no number are pushed to the end rather than dropped.
Sorting by length is an editing tool
Shortest first puts your tightest titles at the top and the bloated ones at the bottom, which is a fast way to find the lines that need cutting. Longest first does the opposite: it surfaces the descriptions that will be truncated in a feed, before you publish them.
Blank lines and spacing
Empty lines are removed and each line is trimmed before sorting, because a stray space changes the comparison and silently splits what should be one entry. If you need the original spacing preserved, keep a copy of your source text before you sort.
How to use Line Sorter
- Paste one item per line.
- Pick a sort order.
- Copy the sorted list.
Line Sorter FAQ
Does it sort case-sensitively?
No. The comparison ignores case, so Apple and apple sit together.
What does numeric mode do with “Step 12”?
It reads 12 from the line and sorts on that value.
Can I sort a comma-separated list?
Not directly — put one item per line first. The Copy Cleaner and Find and Replace tools can help with the conversion.
