What Flesch reading ease measures

The score combines average sentence length with an estimate of syllables per word: 206.835 minus 1.015 times the words per sentence, minus 84.6 times the syllables per word. The result runs from about 0 to 100, where higher is easier. Sixty to seventy reads like plain English — a newspaper feature. Thirty to fifty is academic, and below thirty is legal drafting. Most well-written blog posts land between 55 and 70.

The one number worth fixing

Average sentence length moves the score more than vocabulary does, and it is the number a reader actually feels. Above 25 words per sentence, comprehension drops sharply — not because readers cannot follow it, but because they are scrolling. Split anything over 30 words at its first natural break and the score usually climbs ten points on its own.

Reading time, and why to publish it

Reading time is calculated at 225 words per minute, the average for adult silent reading of ordinary prose. Showing it next to the byline sets an expectation before someone starts, which lifts completion on long guides. If the estimate feels wrong for your audience — a technical tutorial reads slower — round up rather than down.

Where the score misleads

Syllables are counted by a rule of thumb, not a dictionary, so product names, acronyms and non-English words skew the result. A list of short technical terms can score as “easy” while being hard to read, and a single long quoted sentence can drag an otherwise clean page down. Use the score to find sentences worth splitting, not as a grade.

How to use Readability Checker

  1. Paste the text you want to check.
  2. Read the score and the sentence breakdown.
  3. Cut or split the longest sentences and check again.
Questions

Readability Checker FAQ

Does it work for other languages?

The Flesch formula is calibrated for English. The sentence and word counts are still useful, but ignore the score itself.

Does it check grammar or spelling?

No. It measures structure only — sentence length and word complexity.

What score should a pin description aim for?

Seventy or above. Descriptions are read in a feed, in seconds, so short sentences matter more there than anywhere else on the site.
