How many hashtags should a pin have?
Two to five highly relevant hashtags outperform long tag lists. Pinterest reads the description first and treats hashtags as a supporting signal, so a set of eight relevant tags gives you room to test without looking spammy. Start with the broad tier for reach, add one or two niche tags, and skip anything that does not describe the actual pin.
Broad, niche and long-tail tags
Broad tags (#homedecor) put you in an enormous pool where you compete with millions of pins. Niche tags (#smallkitchenstorage) are smaller but far more likely to surface you. Long-tail tags (#kitchenorganizationideas) match the way people type full searches. The strongest pins use one from each tier rather than five from the same one.
Tags that get you ignored
Avoid #followforfollow, #likeforlike and anything unrelated to the image. Pinterest has been explicit that irrelevant tagging is a spam signal, and it can suppress the whole account, not just one pin.
